Montreal Impact re-sign center back Rod Fanni

The 38-year-old featured in most of the 2018 season and the final games of the 2019 season.

The Montreal Impact signed center back Rod Fanni to a one-year contract, the club announced Monday.

The former France international will play a third season in Montreal. The 38-year-old featured in most of the 2018 season and the final games of the 2019 season.

Fanni re-joined the Impact in August 2019 as an emergency signing. The center back played the last three regular season games, which convinced the team’s front office to offer him a new deal.

“We are happy to count on this experienced defender for the season to come,” Impact sporting director Olivier Renard said in a statement. “He proved last season that he can still play at this level and his professionalism will benefit the young players in the group.”

Fanni was a regular on the Impact’s backline in the 2018 season. He played 2,290 minutes, started 26 games and scored one goal for former head coach Remi Garde’s side. The Martigue, France native started in the 29 MLS games he played with the Impact.

Before his time at the Impact, Fanni clocked in 29,895 minutes in France’s Ligue 1. The center back played for RC Lens, OGC Nice, Stade Rennais and Olympique de Marseille between 2002 and 2018.
