Mexican national team, Canadian Premier League respond to coronavirus concerns sweeping American sports

SUM, Mexican Football Federation cancels MEXTOUR March matches

The Canadian Premier League announced on Friday the suspension of its preseason for a 14-day period.

The league had initially announced on Thursday that it would hold on a decision regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, it created a working committee to monitor the situation. As the situation developed, the CPL decided to suspend training camps for two weeks.

“We will maintain our consistent dialogue both internally and externally and as more information becomes available, we will continue to provide public updates,” the league said in a statement. “This includes details about potentially rescheduling or postponing matches as we move towards the season opening date of April 11, 2020.”

CPL clubs opened training camp last Monday with preseason yet to start. The season opener was expected to start April 11 as Calgary’s Cavalry FC visit Forge FC in Hamilton, Ontario. The league insisted its clubs “are not playing in public venues at this time.”

Major League Soccer and the USL Championship announced 30-day suspensions of matches, while Concacaf also suspended the Champions League until further notice.

“We will maintain our consistent dialogue, both internally and externally, and as more information becomes available, we will continue to provide public updates,” the league said. “This includes details about potentially rescheduling or postponing matches.”

El Tri was also scheduled to play Greece at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX on March 29. In addition, SUM and FMF have also cancelled the MEXTOUR live festival concert on March 28 at Dallas Music Hall.
