The United Soccer League extended its training moratorium for USL Championship and League One clubs through Sunday, April 5 amid the continued spread of coronavirus.
The extension of the training moratorium came after the league had already extended its season suspensions through May 10. That decision was made in alignment with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, which called for the postponement or cancellation of all public gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks.
“USL is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), other local, state and national health authorities, the USL Players Association, and professional sports organizations from across the country to ensure the health and wellness of players, staff and supporters remains our top priority,” the league said in a statement on Friday. “As an organization, we greatly appreciate the support and understanding of all USL Championship and League One fans across the country and look forward to being back in action again soon.”
Originally, USL had announced a 30-day suspension of both leagues’ seasons to follow the actions of every other major sports league, including MLS. The USL League One season was originally set to begin at the end of March, while the USL Championship had just kicked off its season when the suspension occurred.
“It was very clear from our owners that the health and safety of players, fans and staff was their top priority,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said in the statement at that time.
