Carlos Vela named MLS Player of the Week

After an explosive performance in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Houston Dynamo, Carlos Vela was named the MLS Player of the Week on Tuesday morning. As has become typical for the forward and captain, Vela had a hand in all four of the team’s goals on Friday, scoring twice and assisting the other two.

So far this season, Vela is one of only six players in the MLS to record statistics in the double digits in both goals and assists, notching 13 goals and 12 assists to help his team to a 16-8-8 record. The team now sits in the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference, only one point behind FC Dallas.

Vela notched his first goal before halftime, converting a penalty kick after being dragged to the ground by the Houston keeper. He coolly finished the penalty kick, then added a cheeky volley in the second half to notch his second goal. Watch all of the highlights of the striker’s performance here:

Friday night was the third time that Vela scored two or more goals in a game, and his first game in which he notched multiple assists in the MLS.
