Houston Dynamo player Andrew Wenger announces retirement

Houston Dynamo player Andrew Wenger, a former No. 1 selection in the MLS SuperDraft, announced his retirement today after an eight-year MLS career that included stops with the Philadelphia Union and Montreal Impact.

Wenger, 27, was a standout at Duke University, and was drafted first overall by the Impact, playing in Montreal from 2012 to 2014. In his MLS career, he played 181 games, starting 115 of those, notching 23 goals and adding 15 assists.

In three seasons with the Dynamo, the versatile Wenger — who played at the forward, midfielder and defender positions — played in 76 games, starting in 56, and contributed 10 goals and 6 assists for the squad. Wenger came to the Dynamo in December 2015 via trade with the Philadelphia Union, where he featured in 2014 and 2015. Wenger won the Dynamo’s Golden Boot in 2016, tying for the team lead with six goals and adding three assists throughout that season. Wenger also scored the opening goal of the 2018 season, in a 4-0 rout over MLS Cup finalist Atlanta United.

“We’d like to thank Andrew for his hard work, dedication and commitment, both on and off the field, since joining the Houston Dynamo,” Dynamo senior vice president and general manager Matt Jordan said. “He has always been a top-class professional and we wish him nothing but the best in the next stage of his career.”

On his Instagram account, Wenger said, “It has been a blast, but my time on the field has come to an end. It has been an honor to play this game and a privilege to do so for three fantastic MLS organizations. I am forever indebted to my family, friends, coaches, staff, and teammates for the support they have given me over the course of this journey. The Houston Dynamo, Philadelphia Union, and Montreal Impact and their fans have made my experience truly special and I am eternally grateful! Thank you all!”
