SEATTLE — The Seattle Sounders signed former academy product and recent Indiana Hoosier Trey Muse to a Homegrown Player contract Tuesday. Muse, 19, was a MAC Hermann trophy semifinalist his sophomore year at Indiana.
“It’s always exciting to add an academy product and we’re pleased to sign Trey to the First Team roster,” Sounders FC general manager Garth Lagerwey said. “We’ve had success at goalkeeper over the years, so we’re looking forward to getting him to work with (goalkeeper coach) Tom Dutra once preseason gets started.”
Muse racked up an impressive host of accolades in his final collegiate season. Both years in the NCAA, he helped lead the Hoosiers to one College Cup appearance and one semifinal appearance. He was named to the first team best 11 by Top Drawer Soccer, College Soccer News, the All-Big Ten team and the All-North Region, as well as being named the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the year. Muse played a role in 15 clean sheets for the Hoosiers in 2018, sharing three of them with backup keeper Sean Caulfield.
“I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity and to begin my professional career with the Sounders after two terrific seasons at Indiana University,” Muse said. “My two years in Bloomington under Head Coach Todd Yeagley and the rest of the IU staff have helped me tremendously for the next step in my journey. I can’t wait to get to Seattle to join the team and get to work for Coach Schmetzer, Coach Dutra and learn from a couple of great veterans in Stefan Frei and Bryan Meredith.”
Muse will likely spend most of his time in the USL Championship in his rookie season, developing his game as a professional behind the 32-year-old Frei. The Sounders’ star goalie finished second in the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year voting last season behind Zack Steffen.
