The Vancouver Whitecaps officially announced the signing of Guinean winger Lass Bangoura from Rayo Vallecano using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) on Wednesday. The impending deal was first reported Monday by Pro Soccer USA.
Bangoura, a 26-year-old attacking winger spent the majority of his career in Spain’s top two divisions, as well as a loan stint in France’s Ligue 1. He now joins the Whitecaps on a one-year loan with an option to purchase.
“Lass has the characteristics we look for in a winger,” Whitecaps head coach Marc Dos Santos said. “He’s explosive, good in one-v-one situations, and he’s been exposed to a lot of different scenarios in Spain, France, and with his national team. We’re looking forward to welcoming him to the club.”
A source in Spain told Pro Soccer USA that Bangours “has plenty of unfulfilled potential,” but can be “a little temperamental” when things aren’t going well.
Bangura is already Vancouver’s seventh acquisition since head coach Dos Santos took over in November. The club is now in preseason training to prepare for its March 2 regular-season kickoff against Minnesota United at BC Place.
