Los Angeles FC did more than add to its unbeaten 5-0-1 record this past weekend when it defeated D.C. United 4-0 at Audi Field.
The club also broke a record for most goals scored through the first six games of a season.
LAFC has scored 19 times already, breaking the previous record of 18 that was held by its crosstown rival, the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Not only did the Galaxy score 18 times inside the first six games of 1998, but they also started the season with nine consecutive victories.
Other teams have had similar starts over the course of Major League Soccer’s 24-year history.
The New York Red Bulls scored 16 goals inside the first six games of the 2012. The Portland Timbers matched that total six games into 2017.
Meanwhile, the 1998 Colorado Rapids, 2005 New England Revolution and the 2006 Houston Dynamo also all scored 15 goals inside the first six games of those seasons.
All of those teams had either a big-time finisher, like New England did with Taylor Twellman, or succeeded in putting up huge scoring outputs more than once within the first weeks of the season.
In rare cases, some teams did both.
LAFC appears to be an extra rare case, though.
Los Angeles FC strikers Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi account for 13 of the team’s 19 goals. Vela, who is putting together an MVP caliber season, leads MLS with seven goals and also has four assists. Rossi, who recorded a hat trick against D.C. United, is second in the league’s scoring table with six goals.
Also, Adama Diomande’s three assists to-date make him second in the league in that category.
Meanwhile, Lee Nguyen has been injured — so LAFC stands to get even stronger in the near future.
LAFC has also scored four or more times in a game three times so far this season.
