D.C. United promotes Stewart Mairs to technical director

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D.C. United appointed Stewart Mairs as its new technical director, the club announced Friday. United hired Mairs in 2016 as director of soccer strategy and analysis. He was responsible for assisting general manager Dave Kasper with recruitment of new talent for United and oversee advanced scouting and preparation for upcoming matches, according to United’s website.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the positive work we’ve done as a club with regards to our player recruitment and roster development,” Mairs said. “I want to thank Dave Kasper and the ownership group for allowing me this opportunity, and I am excited to get started.”

Prior to joining United, Mairs worked at a performance analysis and statistics company based in the the United Kingdom. He also spent three years with the United States women’s national team providing tactical analysis for the team. He worked with USWNT during its 2015 World Cup championship gold-medal winning 2012 London Olympics run.

The hiring of Mairs comes just three months after originally announcing former Real Salt Lake’s Dane Murphy to the same job. Murphy left the club last month to pursue opportunities overseas. He was previously linked to third-tier Barnsley.

In his new role, Mairs have a bigger role in recruiting and running rosters at United and USL affiliate Loudoun United.

“Stewart has been a valuable resource for the club with his expertise in data, and his tactical understanding of the game,” Kaspar said. “He has elevated our scouting network and provided the coaching staff with information and analytics to help prepare for games. We are looking forward to his elevated role in the area of player procurement and roster construction to both Loudoun United and D.C. United.”
