The owner of Columbus Crew SC is rallying support, not for the undefeated team but for an upcoming Austin City Council meeting about potential relocation there.
Precourt Sports Ventures issued a statement asking supporters of the “MLS2ATX” effort to attend Thursday’s resolution hearing, during which Austin City Council members will consider conducting further analysis on a potential stadium site 10 miles north of the Texas capital’s downtown.
“We want to make sure each of our stakeholder groups are represented in council chambers, so council members and attending media know that the Austin community supports the McKalla site and that Austin loves soccer!,” the statement reads.
Precourt Sports Ventures, which acquired Major League Soccer’s original club in 2013, recently identified McKalla Place as the preferred site of a new stadium, after the community overwhelmingly opposed giving up downtown parkland.
Austin Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo drafted the resolution that would lead the city to conduct an analysis of the 24-acre McKalla Place site, to include an economic analysis, financial and traffic considerations and a community engagement plan with stakeholders.
In Columbus, Crew SC is off to a hot start, winning its first two games and tying a third.
