With four weeks of games behind us in the 2018 Major League Soccer season, it’s time to take a look at where teams stand. The MLS Power Rankings are created by a committee of Pro Soccer USA’s editor and writers.
- Columbus Crew SC (3-0-1) — Unbeaten and coming off a 3-1 stomping of D.C United. Columbus cannot lose right now. Who knew Gyasi Zardes would find a rebirth of sorts in Ohio? He leads the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference with three goals.
- New York City FC (3-0-1) — With or without David Villa, Patrick Vieira knows how to coach and NYCFC knows how to play. Ismael Tajouri-Shradi scored again to help his team overcome two New England leads for a draw at Gillette Stadium to remain unbeaten.
- New York Red Bulls (2-1-0) — A Bradley Wright-Phillips brace led the Red Bulls to a big 3-0 win over Minnesota, and they climbed to No. 3 in the Eastern Conference.
- Los Angeles FC (2-0-0) — The newbies are third in the West and rested last week before Saturday’s big match against neighbor L.A. Galaxy.
- Atlanta United FC (2-1-0) — Atlanta comes off a bye week and goes on the road to Minnesota. The Five Stripes are fourth in the East, but their one loss was a doozy.
- Toronto FC (0-2-0) — Bigger fish to fry than MLS. Standings currently irrelevant.
- Sporting Kansas City (2-1-1) — Bleeding goals, but getting the points and results. SKC showed great resilience in coming from behind to get a point on the road.
- Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-1-1) — A scoreless draw at home against the Galaxy was not what the Whitecaps needed, but they’ve had an overall good start to the season.
- Philadelphia Union (1-0-1) — Only two games played, but so far so good. Philly will need to capitalize on this week’s road trip to struggling Colorado.
- Houston Dynamo (1-1-1) — Sitting at sixth in the West, the Dynamo will come off their bye week to host the Revolution this weekend.
- FC Dallas (1-0-2) — FCD is coming off an uninspiring tie with Portland, but remains unbeaten — and that back line has been clean.
- L.A. Galaxy (1-1-1) — Grabbed a point in Vancouver without several key players. Moving forward, Zlatan.
- San Jose Earthquakes (1-1-0) — The Quakes didn’t sit around during the bye week. They played a friendly against Landon Donovan, and now prepare to host NYCFC.
- Real Salt Lake (1-1-1) — Took down the Red Bulls before last week’s bye. RSL will look for the same quality this week in Toronto.
- Minnesota United (2-2-0) — Looked class in wins, but exposed leaky defense in losses. Ethan Finley is great for the Loons, which face a big test versus Atlanta next.
- New England Revolution (1-1-1) — The Revs blew two leads at home and were forced to settle for tie.
- Montreal Impact (1-2-0) — After the bye week, Montreal is heading on a tough road trip to Seattle.
- Seattle Sounders (0-2-0) — Winless, but there’s only a small sample size to evaluate and injuries abound. Also, Dempsey.
- Portland Timbers (0-2-1) — Finally notched their first point of the season last week against Dallas.
- Orlando City SC (0-2-1) — Lions tried to refocus during bye week. Dom Dwyer is set to return for this week’s matchup against the Red Bulls, but they still remain depleted due to injuries.
- D.C. United (0-2-2) — Conceded three goals in 12 minutes, two coming within two minutes of each other, to lose at Columbus. D.C. United also has the worst goal differential (-4) in the East.
- Chicago Fire (0-2-0) — Coming off a bye week, Fire will look for first win at home against Portland.
- Colorado Rapids (0-1-1) — Winless and gave up a two-goal lead at home.
Pro Soccer USA contributors Dylan Butler, Julian Cardillo, Robert Jonas, Emily Olsen and Arman Kafai contributed to the rankings.
