Some mothers who attend Orlando City’s rivalry match against Atlanta United will be treated to more than just a game between two of the top three teams in the Eastern Conference.
The first 1,000 mothers who come to the match, which is at 6 p.m. on Sunday, will receive a purple rose, courtesy of Orlando City coach Jason Kreis.
The promotion is “a small token of appreciation and recognition for all of you mothers out there,” Kreis said in a video released on Twitter.
Kreis, speaking to reporters earlier in the week, said playing on Mother’s Day is special for the club.
“Anybody that’s got a mother or anybody that’s married to a mother, it’s always a special day and it gives us an opportunity to recognize them in a very public forum,” Kreis said.
Midfielder Sacha Kljestan was particularly sentimental while speaking about Mother’s Day. In addition to his wife, Jamie Lee Darley, Kljestan’s mother will be in town for Sunday’s match.
“For my wife, a special day for her,” Kljestan said. “I always joke with her that every day for her is Mother’s Day because I try to take good care of her. She deserves a special day for herself because she really is a super mom. She’s handled a couple of moves now. You know, not only to Belgium and back from Belgium to New York, then down here.
“She pretty much handles that all on her own because I’m always off in preseason and running around with the boys. She’s got the hard job. She’s a stay-at-home mom of two little kids, so I’m very appreciative of what she days on an everyday basis and I hope she knows how much I love her.”
