FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – With New England Revolution left back Chris Tierney out for the season with a torn ACL, the club may have to shake up the defense like it did during Saturday night’s 2-1 victory against the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium.
Revolution coach Brad Friedel originally wanted to start Gabriel Somi at left back against New York, but used Claude Dielna instead after Somi (ankle) failed a fitness test earlier on Saturday.
Friedel, who said he’s pleased with his options at left back for the time being, also said he hopes Somi will be available for Tuesday night’s U.S. Open Cup match at Louisville City.
That said, Friedel and the Revolution front office may look to add some depth behind Somi in the secondary transfer window, which opens on July 1.
“[It] may be a position we may have to look for somebody to come in and compete with Gabriel Somi,” Friedel said. “It’s something we’ll be discussing prior to the July transfer window.”
For now, Somi, when healthy, is likely New England’s first choice left back. Dielna, usually a central defender, made three tackles, three interceptions, and two clearances at left back on Saturday night.
Kelyn Rowe, a midfielder, has also filled in at left back on occasion.
As for Tierney, Friedel is staying optimistic.
“With Chris, we’re going to give him every chance of doing the rehab,” Friedel said. “Hopefully he’s on the field as soon as possible.”
