Both Giovani and Jonathan Dos Santos were selected for the 23-man roster for the Mexican national team ahead of the World Cup in Russia. This is Giovani’s third World Cup, while it is Jonathan’s first.
Giovani Dos Santos played for Mexico in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, as well as the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He has one goal in the tournament, coming in 2014 in Mexico’s 2-1 loss against the Netherlands in the Round of 16.
Mexico has one more friendly June 9th at Brøndby Stadium in Brøndbyvester, Denmark, against Denmark before heading to Russia for the World Cup.
Germany, South Korea and Sweden are in Mexico’s group for the initial stage of the World Cup. Mexico will face Germany June 17th at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow; South Korea June 23rd at Rostov Arena in Rostov-On-Don; and Sweden June 27th at Ekaterinburg Arena in Ekaterinburg. Their schedule moving forward in the tournament depends on these results.
The LA Galaxy have two more matches before the league takes a break for the World Cup. They will face FC Golden State Force on Wednesday in U.S. Open Cup play, and have a home MLS match against Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
The Dos Santos brothers have missed two MLS games so far in preparation for the World Cup, against San Jose and Portland, and are scheduled to miss one more against RSL. They could potentially miss more depending on how well Mexico does in the tournament.
