FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Revolution is working toward adding new talent in the coming weeks.
Monday afternoon after training at Gillette Stadium, Revolution head coach Brad Friedel said the club has two bids out on a pair of international players.
Friedel did not divulge the players’ identities, but he did comment that New England has one open international roster spot. In recent weeks, the club has been linked with a pair of Stoke City players: playmaker Bojan Krkic and defender and Boston area native Geoff Cameron.
“We have a couple bids out [on] exciting players that will hopefully make the squad a lot better,” Friedel said. “We are looking both domestically and internationally. The thing that stays true from preseason to now: any player that we bring in, we want them to be in a place to make the team better. We’re going to have to bring in a very good player to be as good, if not better, than what we currently have.
“Any player that walks through the door is not going to be given a free pass. They have to earn playing time like everyone else.”
With left back Chris Tierney (torn ACL) out for the season, the Revs could use some defensive depth, as Friedel said earlier in the season. The club is also short one playmaker after dealing Lee Nguyen to Los Angeles FC.
“Anyone we do sign, we’re hoping to have them here multiple years,” Friedel added. “That’s not to say we’re never going to sign older, more experienced guys for the short term, but we’re also going to be more prudent with the way we spend money and hopefully have players here for extended stays.”
New England hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy at Gillette Stadium on July 14 for its next league match.
