Crew SC’s Wil Trapp on late game-winner: ‘You gotta shoot your shot’

COLUMBUS — In a game that looked like it was heading for a draw, Wil Trapp took a long-distance shot that found the back of the net. The strike was just the second career goal for the Columbus Crew SC captain, and his first at home. The stoppage-time stunner was good enough to give Crew SC a much-needed 3-2 win over Orlando City.

How did a central midfielder decide to take that chance?

“It’s just one of those things. Shoot your shot. Sometimes they go in,” Trapp said. “You don’t think about a whole lot. I had just played on in and it got cleared, so I thought, ‘Let’s shoot this one.’ I was 42 yards out, so that’s kind of an irresponsible distance, but hey, that’s the way it goes, you gotta shoot your shot.”

Forward Gyasi Zardes, currently second in MLS in goals scored after his brace tonight, was impressed by what he saw.

“Wil’s goal left me speechless,” Zardes said.

Trapp joked when asked about his history of goal scoring, saying, “I scored one goal in college, and it was about 30 yards. I scored one in Houston, and that was about 30 yards, and then this one. So I’ve got a decent track record. Close your eyes and just go for it.”

Crew SC will go on the road next for another Eastern Conference matchup with the New York Red Bulls.
