The United States women’s national team kicked off the 2018 Tournament of Nations on Thursday against rival Japan at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan.
The tournament features the United States, Japan, Brazil and Australia. U.S. head coach Jill Ellis chose a 23-player roster for the event after several days of training. Two players, North Carolina Courage left back Jaelene Hinkle and Houston Dash forward Kealia Ohai, were cut from camp before the final roster was chosen.

The competition tournament format is the same as the SheBelieves Cup and last year’s Tournament of Nations. The four teams each participate in three doubleheader events at three different venues over an eight-day period. The winner of the tournament will be determined by total points. The first tie-breaker is overall goal differential, followed by most tournament goals scored, then head-to-head results and, finally, FIFA Ranking.
