COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Due to impending inclement weather conditions, Wednesday evening’s match at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park between the Colorado Rapids and Seattle Sounders has been postponed to Sept. 7, Major League Soccer announced this morning.
“The safety our players, referees, staff and fans is of the utmost importance, therefore the match has been postponed to September 7 at 7:00 p.m. MT when the match can be safely contested,” the statement read. “A sincere apology goes out to both Colorado and Seattle fans for any inconvenience posed by this change. Ticket holders for this game will receive further communication from the club later today.”
The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the Denver metro area with snow accumulation expected from 8-10 inches and wind gusts upward of 41 mph.
Colorado previously played a match in the snow during its season opener March 2, which holds the record for the coldest game played in MLS history.

The match, which saw the Rapids go down to 10 men, resulted in a 3-3 draw with Portland Timbers.
“Look, as much as it’s fun to watch this, I hate playing in this crap,” Rapids midfielder said following the game dubbed Snow Clasico 3 earlier this season. “This isn’t football. It’s crazy. We all stuck together and did a job, but it’s difficult than anything you’ve trained all preseason when the field is basically sand. The snow at the end of the game was probably three or four inches. The ball sticks. It just becomes a different game.”
Originally scheduled to play two home games this week, Colorado is expected to return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday against D.C. United.
