LA Galaxy defender Julian Araujo added to US U-20 World Cup Roster

Araujo replaces Ayo Akinola, who injured his ankle

LOS ANGELES — LA Galaxy defender Julian Araujo has been added to the United States’ 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup roster. Araujo replaces Ayo Akinola, who injured his ankle and will be unavailable for the tournament, which begins this week.

Araujo was a part of the 50-player provisional roster, allowing him to be eligible for selection after approval from the tournament medical committee. His previous experience with the U.S. youth national teams includes participation in the 2018 Concacaf Under-20 Championship last November and two friendlies with the U-23 side this March. For the Galaxy this season, 17 year-old Araujo has played 289 minutes across five appearances.

The U-20 World Cup begins for the United States on Friday against Ukraine. Their other group stage matches are Monday against Nigeria and May 30 against Qatar.
