The New England Revolution have made a long-term commitment to goalkeeper Matt Turner.
Turner signed a new contract with the club Wednesday morning, four days after the Revolution’s 1-1 tie against the New York Red Bulls in which he beat his personal record for most saves in a single game.
Turner, who has the fourth-highest save percentage in the league (73.3%), made nine saves against the Red Bulls Saturday night. The match was also Turner’s 13th appearance of the season and ninth consecutive start since winning back his place back as starter from Brad Knighton and Cody Cropper earlier this season.
New England did not release the terms of Turner’s extension, but said it was a “multi-year” deal in a prepared release.
A source told Pro Soccer USA that Turner’s new contract and salary would not kick in until 2020.
The MLS Players Union lists Turner’s previous salary just a shade under $76,000 per season, which is less than the amount the league’s salary guide said is being paid to Cropper ($77,520) and Knighton ($116,253).
Given that he started 27 games last year and has appeared in 40 of the club’s last 60 games over the last two seasons, Turner’s new salary likely reflects his most recent contributions on the field.
Turner, 25, signed with the Revolution as an undrafted college player out of Fairfield University in 2016.
“Since I arrived at the club earlier this year, Matt has been a consummate professional and an excellent ambassador for the Revolution on and off the field.” Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said in the club’s statement. “We hope to see Matt in a Revolution shirt for years to come, and we look forward to seeing him continue to develop as a goalkeeper and a leader in our locker room.”
