The Vancouver Whitecaps have traded goalkeeper Zac MacMath to Real Salt Lake City in exchange for $50,000 Targeted Allocation Money, the club announced Tuesday.
“We’re thankful for Zac’s contributions to the club during his time in Vancouver and wish him the best in Salt Lake,” Whitecaps FC coach Marc Dos Santos said in an official statement released by the club.
After trading MacMath, the ‘Caps currently have two goalkeepers on their MLS roster in Maxime Crépeau and Thomas Hasal.
Vancouver acquired MacMath via trade from Colorado Rapids in December 2018.
Originally brought in to challenge for the number 1 role, MacMath struggled for playing time and made just eight appearances in which he conceded 13 goals and went 1-3-4 and had a 1.63 goals-against average.
Overall, the 28-year-old MacMath has played with three teams since being drafted fifth overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union. In 142 MLS games, MacMath has a career record of 47-54-40 with 36 clean sheets and a 1.33 goals-against average.
By acquiring MacMath, Real Salt Lake could have a No. 1 goalkeeper to replace the retired Nick Rimando. He’ll compete with David Ochoa and Andrew Putna for playing time.
“We welcome Zac to the team,” RSL coach Freddy Juarez said in an official statement issued by Real Salt Lake. “He brings valuable experience in MLS and will have an opportunity to compete to start.”
