The cadre of American and Canadian players whose clubs are still competing in Europa League learned their paths to the quarterfinals at the Round of 16 draw Friday.
U.S. centerback John Anthony Brooks and VFL Wolfsburg of the German Bundesliga will face Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.
Scottish Premiership side Rangers FC, home to American defender Matt Polster and Canadian midfielder Scott Arfield, will play the Bundesliga’s Bayer Leverkusen.
The English Premier League’s Wolverhampton Wanderers, who currently have 19-year-old New York City native Owen Otasowie under contract, are matched with Greece’s Olympiacos.
Otasowie has spent most of the campaign with the Wolves reserves, but played 17 minutes of a 4-0 Europa League group victory over Besiktas and was also on the bench for a 3-3 tie with Sporting Clube de Braga.
Finally, U.S. men’s national team full back Timmy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt will face FC Basel.
The Round of 16 matches will be played over two legs, taking place March 12 and 19.
FiveThirtyEight projects Otosowie’s Wolverhampton and Brooks’ Wolfsburg have a greater than 50% chance of reaching the quarterfinals.
