Following the lead of other sports organizations around the world, Concacaf announced Friday it would suspend play for 30 days to help reduce the spread of the new coronavirus.
“The Concacaf Council took these decisions with the welfare of everyone involved in mind and in light of developing travel restrictions and public health guidance,” the Concacaf statement read.
The tournaments impacted include this season’s Champions League, men’s Olympic qualifiers that were set to take place in Mexico, first-round matches for 2021 Gold Cup qualifying and the Caribbean Cup Shield.
The move impacts the U-23 United States men’s national team, which was preparing to participate in the Olympic qualifiers, and the three MLS teams remaining in the Champions League: Atlanta United, Los Angeles FC and New York City FC.
“Concacaf is committed to working with key stakeholders to consider options on how and when to reconvene these competitions and any new decision will be communicated in due course,” the statement read.
Concacaf joins a long list of major sports leagues and organizations in North America and Europe that have made similar decisions as the pandemic continues.
