The only scheduled National Women’s Soccer League match for July 28, the Chicago Red Stars hosting Sky Blue FC, has been postponed.
Sky Blue’s original flight to Chicago was canceled on Friday and there was no easy solution to reschedule, according to a statement released Saturday by the league.
“The lack of feasible alternate options that allow the club to arrive in time to adequately and safely prepare for the game” led to the postponement, the statement said. The match will be rescheduled for a later date.
This means the Red Stars could have five national team players back for the rescheduled match. Americans Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, Morgan Brian and Casey Short, along with Australian Sam Kerr were called up for the Tournament of Nations, which is already underway. Sky Blue was due to be without Carli Lloyd and Mexican Katie Johnson.
The Red Stars had summoned five players from their reserve team to replace the national team players. The Red Stars’ next match is set for Aug. 10, which would be eight days after the Tournament of Nations ends. Sky Blue is set to play in Orlando Aug. 5.
Red Stars coach Rory Dames took to Twitter to vent about the cancelation happening when weather in the Chicagoland area has been perfect.

For Chicago, it could give the team a home match down the stretch. The way the schedule was originally set, the Red Stars were going to finish with four straight matches on the road. Depending on when this match gets rescheduled, that could break up the road trip.
